Today’s Project Management Global Briefing: Politics Is Still One of the Biggest Risks on Government Projects

Government projects rarely fail because the engineering is too complex. They fail because the politics is.

This week’s discussion on bridging the political divide lands on an uncomfortable truth: public sector projects are often set up to struggle long before delivery begins. Priorities shift with election cycles, stakeholders pull in different directions, and decisions are shaped as much by optics as outcomes.

For project managers, this creates a uniquely difficult environment. You are not just managing scope, cost, and time; you are navigating competing agendas, unclear ownership, and strategies that can change overnight. The technical challenge is rarely the hardest part.

Too often, we treat political complexity as an external factor; something to be managed around. In reality, it is central to delivery. Projects succeed when alignment is built early, governance is clear, and decisions are anchored in long-term value rather than short-term wins.

The gap is not capability. It is coherence.

Until government projects are designed to survive political change, rather than be reshaped by it, delivery will remain inconsistent. And project managers will continue to carry risks they never truly controlled.
